When Channel texted me that I was the new Spotlight Athlete, my response was “I think you meant to send this to someone else”. Needless to say I was surprised!
I have been physically active my whole life. I was a cheerleader in high school and remember we would get together and do “Jane Fonda” tapes . In college, my roommate and I started doing step aerobics and some light weights at a small gym close to our apartment. When I moved to San Antonio, I joined a local gym and primarily did step, weights and some running if I couldn’t make it to a class. I loved group fitness so much that I became an ACE certified instructor in 1998. Again, my focus was on step aerobics and lifting weights in a group setting. I started teaching at Racquetball and fitness and they asked me if I would be interested in teaching yoga. They would pay for my first training if I would then teach a beginner class. Up to this point, stretching was not really part of my fitness routine. Before agreeing to it, I went to a class and my abs were so sore and we didn’t do ONE crunch or “ab” exercise. And frankly, although I was in my late 20’s at the time, my body was already telling me it needed it! I had completed my first triathlon but was having severe sciatic nerve pain. Adding yoga just once a week, completely cured it. When Lifetime Fitness came to SA, I joined their team. During that time, I continued learning more and it took me a few years but I finally got in my 200 hours of yoga training to become a Registered Yoga Trainer. I also met and became friends with Becky Day who kept telling me about Channel and that I just had to come to bootcamp with her sometime. At that time, the classes were at Powerhouse which wasn’t close to where I lived and I just couldn’t fit it in. But when ABC moved to the current location, I went with her to class and immediately bought a punch card. I LOVED the workout and the family atmosphere of the gym. But since I was at LTF, my workouts at ABC were sporadic, just whenever Becky and I could workout together. Then in July 2015, we moved to Spring Branch and the drive to LTF was no longer working for me. Last April, I was driving to work and just decided that today was the day I had to make a change and gave my 2 week notice. Hours later, I had my first face to face meeting with Channel. Prior to that, our only connection was a few Facebook messages. Talking to her I felt like I had known her forever. A few weeks later, she called and asked if I’d be interested in subbing and helping out over the summer and hopefully eventually starting yoga at ABC. I guess you’d say the rest is history. I couldn’t be more thankful to be a part of ABC/IACF family. Thank you Channel, Tommy and all the coaches for being so welcoming and to the aMAZEn members that I get the honor to coach. Tauni

Happy to spend the workout Monday honoring one of our coaches! I just love our gym and hopefully one of these days, i'll try a yoga class out too :)
Congrats on being chosen as spotlight athlete, Tauni! I am so glad you have become a part of our ABC/IACF family! You are such an amazing coach (even when I try to hide from you during WODs) and your patience and amazing communication skills have turned this stiff girl into a wanna be yogi! I can't wait to honor you on Monday :)
